How to Register

Voting is very important and the first step is registration. At least 30 days prior to an election any U.S. Citizen, 18 years of age or older, who has not been finally convicted of a felony or found mentally incompetent by a court and is a resident of the county, may register to vote. If you are currently registered and have not moved from your registration address, you do not need to re-register for each election.

This means nearly everyone is entitled to register and you can register at any time. You must fill out an application and deliver the completed application to the Voter Registrar in your county of residence. The application must be one approved by the Secretary of State. You can mail the application or deliver it in person. Call 576-1024 and we will mail you an application or come to the Elections Office at 111 N. Glass in Victoria and pickup an application. You may complete the application in our office and register right away.

On the application you will need to include your full name as well as your residence address. If your residence does not have an address, you must include a description of the location of your residence sufficient to allow the voter registrar to determine your voting precinct. You must also include your date of birth and make the following statement: “I affirm that I am a resident of this county; have not been finally convicted of a felony or if a felon I am eligible for registration under section 13.001, Election Code; and have not been declared mentally incompetent by final judgment of a court of law.” You must also affirm that you are a citizen of the United States.

You must include your Texas Driver’s License Number or Texas Identification Number or the last four digits of your Social Security Number You must also include a mailing address if it is different from your residence address.

You may include a phone number by which the Voter Registrar may contact you, but it is not required. You do not have to indicate your gender.

The Voter Registrar will either accept or reject your registration application. The determination is made by verifying that all required information is present on the application. If accepted, you will receive a Voter Registration Certificate in the mail. Check that all information on the certificate is correct. Your certificate can be used as your identification at the polling place.  Should you be rejected, the Voter Registrar will notify you by mail the reason for rejection. You may either provide additional information in a new application or contact the Voter Registrar for additional information.

Once you are registered, remember to vote.
