How to Vote

Your best bet in voting is to show up at your polling place. Voting takes place in each of the election polling places located throughout the county. Your residence is located within the boundaries of an election precinct and one polling location is established within that precinct. On Election Day each polling location must be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Election personnel serve in each of the polling locations. Their job is to assist every voter so that a fair and impartial election process is protected. Each polling location has a Presiding Election Judge who overseas the election process. This person is a resident of the election precinct and quite possibly, one of your neighbors. If you have any question about the method to cast your vote, ask the election judge for help.

Once you arrive at the polling place you should present your voter’s registration certificate or some form of identification. Your name will be checked on the list of registered voters to determine that you are in the correct polling place. If you are on the list, you will be asked to sign the signature roster and poll list. This document indicates your desire to vote in the election and your presence at the polling location.

After you have signed the roster you will be directed to a voting booth. Inside the voting booth you must make your choices for candidates. To complete your vote you must press the VOTE button.

There may be several races and several candidates for each race. Mark only one candidate in each race (some elections allow you to vote for more than one candidate). Be sure to mark all the candidates you have chosen and go back to check that you have voted in every race you intended.

Check that you have completed all races on the ballot for which you wish to vote.

All this can be accomplished by locating a sample ballot prior to the election. A sample ballot is published in our local paper and is also available from the League of Women Voters.

Go through the races and candidates on the sample ballot and determine for whom you wish to vote. Either mark your sample ballot and take it with you to the polling place, or make your own list of candidates and bring it along to the polling place. Once you have qualified to vote, you will be guided to the voting booth and there you can check your list against the actual ballot.

None of this can be accomplished without first deciding voting is important and you must participate.
