The 9 Most Important Minutes of Your Child's Day
09/17/2025

As busy parents, we all strive to create more meaningful interactions with our children among the stress of nonstop, 24/7 parenting. Research has found that just nine minutes of focused attention a day is an effective way to improve the parent/child bond that helps us become better parents.

Nine minutes a day can be the most important moments of a child's day. These can be broken down into the first 3 minutes after they wake up, the first 3 minutes after they nap or get out of school, and the last 3 minutes of the day at bedtime.

The first 3 minutes of the day start after your child wakes up. How you start the morning influences the rest of the day and can set the tone for a positive day. Parents have an opportunity to greet their child with love and positivity. Begin each day by checking in with your kiddo and asking them questions like what they are most looking forward to. This is a great way to let them know that you see them, care about them, and are there for them.

The 3 minutes after your child gets home from school or daycare. When you first see your child after a long day, they need to reconnect with you. Greeting your child with a hug, a snack, or a "how was your day" goes a long way and gives them a sense of love and belonging. Expressing your gratitude for reuniting and engaging them about their day. Starting a conversation to express themselves will provide them with great communication skills.

The 3 minutes before they go to bed. How your child falls asleep influences how well they sleep and how they feel about themselves as they fall asleep. Establishing a calming bedtime routine helps promote relaxation and connection. Ending the night with happiness gives them a sense of feeling seen, heard, and valued. This is the perfect time to calm down together and settle in for the day. Tucking them in shows a gesture of love and security.

Why do these moments matter? These moments provide children with security, attachment, and quality time. Anyone can share these moments by remaining present, connecting, and being flexible. By focusing on these nine minutes of connection, parents can nurture their parent/child bond, promoting emotional well-being and creating lasting memories. Remember, the rest of the day is full of moments where we can use our parenting toolkits to raise thoughtful, confident, resilient little humans!
